Hi, I’m Du Nghiem (b. 2003, Hanoi). I’m a Master of Architecture candidate at Rice University.
I graduated from Yale College in May 2025 with a B.A. in Architecture and Psychology, earning distinction in both majors.

I love desire paths, hammock naps, palm reading, sending postcards, and the cold feel of concrete. I am interested in memory preservation, mapping and counter-mapping.

I hope to design with curiosity, courage, and care.

A5-1.  ROTARY HOUSES

Academic Project, Core Studio I
Fall 25, Rice School of Architecture
Instructor: Monica Rivera

This project reimagines a typical Levittown-style suburban house in San Juan, Puerto Rico, structures often shaped by fear, poor climatic performance, and enclosure. Inspired by the climatic intelligence of Old San Juan’s courtyard architecture, my proposal seeks to rehabilitate the social and spatial logics of suburban dwelling.

STRATEGY

Three residences center around a meandering path that choreographs movement, light, and interaction. The first residence, adapted from the original Bilbao model, sits at the front of the plot. The second unit sits atop the first. The third house is situated at the plot’s edge, approached through a garden strip.

AGGREGATE

Organized around a meandering path, the three residences use 45-degree diagonals and L-shaped modules to create pockets of space and choreograph transitions from public to private realms. Diagonal breezeways link patios and terraces, shaded interiors sit between open-air voids, and pivot-louvered doors allow façades to fully open for ventilation and light.

The open floor plans allow the space to adapt easily to different uses, such as offices, libraries, or other evolving public programs.
